POLICE are not responsible for the death of a young man in West Sepik, Vanimo, commander Chief Insp Patrick Billy says.
“The viral posting on social media, alleging police were responsible for his death, is false,” he added.
Billy said police roped in several suspects for questioning after an armed robbery on the Bewani Highway on Dec 27.
“Among these suspects was the deceased who has completed his Grade 10 last year and was selected to do his Grade 11 this year.
“While in the police station in Vanimo for interrogation, the mother of the deceased arrived and reported that her son (the deceased) had a health condition that needed urgent medical attention.
“Police then released the deceased to his mother upon agreement that after his medication, the mother would bring him back for interrogation. “Unfortunately, the boy died on Jan 14 in Vanimo General Hospital,” he added.
The social media posting alleged that the boy had died from injuries sustained by police brutality.
Billy said the young man was made known to them by his mother that he had an existing medical condition.
“If that is what they claimed as police brutality, then we will have to wait and get a medical report or post mortem to ascertain the truth,” he added. “Until than, we will not say anything but police will investigate this matter further,” Billy said.
Meanwhile, different sections of police in Vanimo are sharing police vehicles to carry out their duties.
“One important section, the CID, is without a vehicle and cannot follow up effectively on outstanding cases at the moment.
“This has caused delays in investigations,” Billy said.
