Fugitive recaptured after brief gunfight with cops, 8-hour manhunt

PORT MORESBY: A fugitive who escaped from Bomana Prison on Repentance Day last year was recaptured on Saturday (Feb 26, 2022) after a brief gunfight with police and a more than eight-hour manhunt.

National Capital District/Central commander Asst Comm Anthony Wagambie Jr said the fugitive was spotted in Gerehu Stage 6 on Friday (Feb 25, 2022) evening.

“The fugitive turned around and fired at Fox Unit 203 team, sending policemen scurrying for cover behind their vehicle.

“The policemen then called for backup and reinforcements,” he added.

A FUGITIVE who escaped from Bomana Prison on Repentance Day last year was recaptured on Saturday after a short gunfight with police and a more than eight-hour manhunt.
National Capital District/Central commander Assistant Commissioner Anthony Wagambie Jr said the fugitive was spotted in Gerehu Stage 6 on Friday evening.
“The fugitive turned around and fired at Fox Unit 203 team, sending policemen scurrying for cover behind their vehicle.
“The policemen then called for backup and reinforcements.
“Fox unit 204 responded with detectives from the police headquarters.
“The fugitive made a run for cover when he realised police were looking for him.
“However, police combed the area and found the fugitive hiding in a house at 2am on Saturday.
“The fugitive again tried to make a run for it when he was injured by policemen and was rushed to the hospital.
“Police seized several sets of police uniform and an empty pistol magazine in the house,” he added.
The fugitive’s recapture brings the total number of escapees recaptured to seven with 11 still on the run.
Still on the run are remandees Nathan Epe, Bonny Walken, Brian Darius, Honiara Amenai, Walter Able, Junior Paul and Joseph Samuel.
Along with the remandees are Charlton Eric, a convicted prisoner, Emax Goasa who is on death row and Russell Tom.
