TROUBLE is brewing in
Bulolo with the relatives of a murdered man demanding K20,000 compensation or
they will retaliate with violence.
And Morobe police commander Supt Jacob Singura has advised the relatives not to
take the law into their hands.
“We will not tolerate this and are asking leaders from both sides to work
closely with the police as it is treated as a criminal offence now,” he said,
adding that both parties should let police deal with the case and leave it to
the court to make a final decision.
The man was murdered last weekend at a road construction site in Wau’s Winima
village and the relatives have given a week for compensation to be paid or they
will take the law in their hands.
The deceased is from Biangai and Garaina had demanded the compensation from the
people of Winima.
Singura said the deceased was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he
approached a road construction company digging at a site which he claimed was
his land.
“He demanded that the construction company pay him K300 for taking out soil,”
he said.
“While demanding, the deceased allegedly had in his possession a bush knife
which he allegedly attempted to attack a local who was working for the company.
“The worker then retaliated with his relatives and chopped up the deceased who
died on the spot.”
Wau police station commander Senior Inspector Leo Kaikas said the deceased was
wanted by police for a string of serious offences committed in and around Wau
town over the years.
No arrests have been made so far, but police in Wau are continuing with
investigations and had asked leaders from both sides to hand over suspects.
“We have experienced in the past where when suspects committed offences and
went into hiding with the communities, people do not come out and report the
whereabouts of the suspects,” he said.
Kaikas said, to calm the tension between the rival groups, community leaders
had to work with police and bring forth the suspects to face the law.
He said all parties involved must respect the rule of law and make way for
justice to take its course.
