AN alleged Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected health officer and alleged adulterer was charged with murder for intentionally having sexual intercourse with a mother of two.
The mother of two died from the disease on March 3.
Goroka Committal Court Magistrate Barbra Gore, on Tuesday told Jerry Levi, 30, that the charge was serious and denied him bail.
Levi, a health extension officer with Medical Company International SOS in Tari’s Hides Gas, is charged with intentionally transmitting the deadly disease via sexual intercourse. Magistrate Gore said if Levi wanted bail, he could make a formal bail application with the National Court.
Senior police prosecutor Sergeant Joe Pipi objected bail on grounds that Levi had no permanent residence in Goroka and being an alleged HIV positive man, he was likely to spread the virus to others.
Magistrate Gore then adjourned the matter to April 29 to allow time for police investigators to complete the hand-up briefs for the court.
Levi, from Maraba village in Kairuku-Hiri, Central, while on duty travels, allegedly met the mother in Chimbu’s Kundiawa and Lae on different occasions between May 1 and Dec 31.
Levi is alleged to have been enticing the mother, a nursing officer with Sky Medical Services in Port Moresby, into having extra marital unprotected sex.
Levi allegedly took the mother into his custody for eight months, forcing her husband to lodge a police report in search for her.
After the husband lodged police reports in Port Moresby and Kundiawa, Levi was put under immense pressure to release the mother to reunite with her husband and children, aged three and 11. The mother’s health started deteriorating and losing weight that led to her death from Tuberculosis and HIV on March 3.
According to the court information, the husband later discovered text and WhatsApp messages between Levi and his wife, and lodged a police report. A police internal investigation unit led by Chief Inspector Apollos Terry then travelled to Goroka, arrested Levi and charged him on March 26 with murder by intentionally infecting the mother with HIV.
