The Sanctuary Hotel operations manager Jamie
Pang has filed a bail application at Waigani National Court yesterday regarding
his charge of breaching visa condition and allegedly raping a girl.
Acting judge Justice Laura Wawun-Kuvi adjourned the hearing of the application
to next week to allow the State lawyer to gather information on the case.
Justice Wawun-Kuvi told Pang’s lawyer that bail application must be served to
the public prosecutor’s office three days before the hearing.
The State lawyer informed the Court that the State had received the bail
application on Tuesday and would need time to prepare.
Pang had filed a bail application at Waigani Committal Court last Thursday,
regarding his rape charge and was refused.
He was refused bail due to the seriousness of the allegations involved when he
allegedly raped the 20-years-old girl in Port Moresby last year.
Magistrate Nii, in refusing Pangs bail, said there were assaults and threats of
violence used in the event.
Nii said Pang’s bail would not be in the interest of justice since his action
caused subsequent strings of several sexual assaults to the victim by the taxi
driver and a policeman which was initially started by him.
Magistrate Danny Wakikura, during Pang’s conviction for breaching visa
condition at Waigani Committal Court on Feb 21, told him that he was entitled
to file a bail application for beaching visa condition only if he was granted
bail for his rape charge.
Pang was charged with breaching visa condition for being in possession of
illegal item such as firearms, bullets and drugs.
While Pang was in Immigration Detention Centre, a video of the victim being
threatened by a police officer not to report to police that she was raped by
Pang went viral on Facebook and he was arrested and charged for allegedly
raping the victim.
