Man jailed 30 years for sorcery-killing

PORT MORESBY: Papua New Guinea (PNG) has enforced tougher laws on Sorcery-Related Violence (SRV).

Yesterday (March 28, 2022), the National Court in Popondetta jailed a man 30 years with hard labour for killing a woman he suspected of practicing sorcery.

Acting judge Camillus Sambua told Clancy Ambura that one could not claim a death was the result of sorcery and then use that as a reason for killing another.

“Killing on suspicion is not right and there is no proof that Diana Doveha  killed your mother,” judge Sambua said.

THE Popondetta National Court has sentenced a man to 30 years with hard labour for killing a woman he suspected of practicing sorcery.
Acting judge Camillus Sambua, in sentencing Clancy Ambura of Sewa village in Ijivitari, Northern, said one could not claim a death was the result of sorcery and then use that as a reason for killing another.
“Killing on suspicion is not right and there is no proof that the deceased killed your mother,” he told Ambura.
“The accused has no regard to human life and the killing is like that of an animal.” Ambura pleaded guilty to one count of murder.
He suspected that the deceased, Diana Doveha, had killed his mother through sorcery.
Public defence lawyer Emmanuel Yavisa, during his submission on sentence, asked the court for a term of 20 to 25 years for his client.
State lawyer Solomon Kuku submitted that the case fell into the gravest category (three) of such cases (State vs Manu Kovi 2005 SC789) and the maximum sentence of life imprisonment was appropriate.
Justice Sambua said due to the circumstances of the case and the need for the sentence to be a deterrent, he sentenced Ambura to 30 years imprisonment. Ambura killed Doveha by stabbing her several times in the abdomen with a spear last April 21, while she was watching a volleyball match at Sewa village in Popondetta.
He fled when bystanders intervened while Doveha was rushed to the Popondetta General Hospital but died later.
