A POLICE reservist is dead and two other regular policemen are in critical condition at Tari General Hospital following a gun battle between police and men from Kupari village in Hela.
Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for the Highlands western end, John Kale, said the incident happened yesterday when the policemen from Mobile Squad 9 unit went to Kupari village for a peace mediation.
“The policemen did not know that the warlords were ready to attack them when they went to the village,” he said of the ambush on his personnel.
“This resulted in the shooting of three policemen. They were rushed to the hospital and one is confirmed dead while the other two are in critical condition.”
Kale said as the policemen were rushing their injured colleagues to the hospital for treatment, the warlords went to the Pai police barracks and burned down four houses.
“Four houses were completely burnt down while the policemen managed to save two other houses,” he said.
Kale said the two injured policemen would be flown to Port Moresby today. “Their wounds are bad and they need better healthcare so they will be medevaced,” he said.
Kale said the families of the policemen that lost their homes in the fire would be accommodated in another police barracks.
Kale said police reinforcements from Wabag in Enga and Hides (Hela) were on their way to assist police in Tari.
He said prior to the incident, men from the Kikita 2 tribe and the Linapini tribe were allegedly attacking and killing each other.
“On Monday, the Kikita 2 tribe shot two men from the Linapini tribe. One died and one is in critical condition in the hospital,” he said.
“Police attended to solve the problem today (yesterday) and it turned into a nasty gun battle.”
He said with the continuous killing of police and military personnel in Tari, the leaders of the province needed to step up to address the law and order issues in the province.
Kale said if the people kept on killing policemen and soldiers who were deployed to provide security for the province, then there will be no more police stationed there.
“The security personnel are not their enemies and the killing of police and soldiers needs to stop,” he said.
