Sanctuary Hotel's Pang fined K4,000 for visa breach

(He remains in remand for a rape charge)

PORT MORESBY: Sanctuary Hotel operations manager Jamie Pang was fined K4,000 in default four-and-a-half months’jail by the Waigani committal court for breaching his visa conditions.

Magistrate Danny Wakikura told Pang yesterday that he reserved the maximum penalty for worse cases as it was the first time Pang appeared in court for breaching visa conditions.

“If the fine is not paid by Thursday (March 24, 2022), you will be jailed,” he added.

Pang remains in remand for a rape charge.

Magistrate Danny Wakikura told Pang yesterday that he reserved the maximum penalty for worse cases as it was the first time Pang appeared in court for breaching visa conditions.
“If the fine is not paid by Thursday, you will be jailed,” he added.
Magistrate Wakikura said Pang was found guilty for breaching visa conditions upon his own admission to the charge and for having illegal firearms and ammunition.
“I have heard the submissions on sentence and decided not be very lenient or very harsh in the case,” he said.
Between January 2021 and Dec 20, Pang living in Papua New Guinea on a working resident visa and while operating as the operations manager of Sanctuary Hotel engaged in storing illegal items, namely firearms and ammunition.
Pang was arrested and charged with 11 counts of offences under the Firearms Act.
He pleaded guilty to all charges in the Boroko District Court and was fined a total of K130,000.
After the media publication of his charges, immigration conducted an internal investigation, arrested and charged him under section 16(1)(d) of the Immigration Act for breaching his visa conditions which he pleaded guilty in court on Feb 21.
Meanwhile, Pang is still in remand for a rape charge.
