POLICE Commissioner David Manning says the police rapid response fox units are being investigated for the alleged assault of a 21-year-old man on Feb 27.
Samuel Naraboi, a son of Senior Constable Benjamin Naraboi, is still fighting for his life at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
He was allegedly assaulted between 6am and 7am on Feb 27 near the Games Village police barracks, in Waigani, Port Moresby.
Dad Benjamin said: “He does not recognise us. Why the unit policemen just arrest him and take him to Waigani police station? Instead, he was kept in the police vehicle and driven around. However, when my wife got to the unit in the town police station, it was 11am and my son was only in his underwear.”
Manning said police investigators were working on the case with an arrest to be made soon.
Samuel and a friend were walking to the Waigani bus stop from Tokarara near the junction leading to the Games Village police barracks when he asked a betel-nut seller for a betel nut.
The betel-nut seller allegedly swore at Samuel. An off-duty policeman who drove up and spoke briefly with the betel-nut seller then chased Samuel and his friend, telling people to arrest Samuel.
As he laid on the ground, the policeman allegedly kicked Samuel on the face. His friend tried to interfere but the policeman allegedly punched him too.
Members of a fox unit who arrived at the scene picked up Samuel and dumped him in the police vehicle.
Samuel’s mother Regina, after being told of the incident, went to the Waigani police station and saw Samuel in his underwear and moaning.
“They said he was drunk and had been smoking marijuana. I said whatever my son has done, leave it for now, and let me take him to the hospital,” she added.
“They refused, I argued and they finally said yes.”
