ACP Philip: It’s illegal for MPs to buy firearms for cops to use in General Election 2022

PORT MORESBY: Border commander ACP Peter Philip says it is illegal for politicians to buy high-powered guns and cars to be used by policemen in General Election 2022.

“Politicians should not buy firearms for policemen to use because they are trained to use only certain types of guns,” he added.

Philip was responding to reports that some Members of Parliament (MPs) had been doing that without his knowledge, as the general election approaches.

IT is illegal for politicians to buy high-powered guns and cars to be used by policemen in their areas, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Border Command) Peter Philip.
He was responding to reports that some MPs had been doing this without his knowledge, as the general election approaches.
“Politicians should not buy high-powered firearms for policemen to use,” he said.
He said policemen were trained to use only certain types of guns.
“This is the wrong time for politicians to buy guns and issue them to policemen.
“It is unlawful,” he said.
“High-powered firearms can cause many serious problems during the election (period). “Leaders are discouraged from purchasing them and issuing them to policemen without approval.”
ACP Philip said MPs had been using public funds to buy guns and cars for policemen.
“This is public money used to buy cars and guns,” Philip said.
“It must be made known so we can account for them as these cars get fuel from the bowser and the guns need to be registered before they can be used,” he said.
He warned provincial police commanders not to allow any politician to unofficially buy guns and vehicles for police.
There is no proper records of guns, cars and other assets belonging to the constabulary in the provinces.
