POLICE have arrested four more suspects on Friday in connection with the deadly feud between the people of Finschhafen and Mumeng in Bulolo’s Wau, Morobe, commander Superintendent Jacob Singura says.
This brings to a total of 24 people arrested for the ethnic fighting that broke out on March 27 which has claimed nine lives and the destruction of more than 100 houses to date.
The fight erupted following a domestic difference between a couple who have been arrested as the main instigators of the feud.
Singura said police were in the midst of interrogating those arrested and “we are appealing to community leaders (who are playing neutral roles) to identify the main suspects who are still at large”.
Singura said some policemen deployed to beef up security in Wau would leave for Madang’s Raicoast today to attend to Hetwara gang that was causing law and order problems there at the moment.
Singura said the situation on the ground was now quiet but there was still a need for peace negotiations between the two groups of settlers.
“What has happened is gone,” he said.
“The leaders of both sides should now focus on how to bring about peace and rebuild lives.”
