POLICE have arrested a man and a woman suspected of instigating the deadly fight in Bulolo’s Wau in Morobe on March 27.
The suspects are believed to have been engaged in an extra marital affair.
The fighting saw two men killed, another two hospitalised and 47 houses razed.
The fighting between Mumeng and Finschhafen settlers in Nami Ward 4, made more than 300 villagers homeless.
Morobe police commander Superintendent Jacob Singura said the man and woman were arrested last week and were in police custody.
“We expect to make more arrests in the coming week,” he said.
Singura said the situation between the two rival groups was still tense while police continue to monitor security.
Singura said the operation into the incident would go on for two weeks and police would be calling in victims and other witnesses to have statements recorded to identify suspects involved in the fighting.
Police also reported that Kapin and Regina primary schools had closed due to the situation, but Wau town was generally normal and businesses were operating as usual.
Singura appealed to the district authorities to help the victims of the fighting (especially those who lost their houses and other belongings) as many were going without shelter and living in makeshifts.
“Police is now looking at identifying suspects from both sides and have them arrested and charged,” he said.
Meanwhile, Wau police station commander Senior Inspector Leo Kaikas said police now needed leaders from both parties as well as the district authorities to work together and bring the situation under control to avoid further escalations.
He confirmed that there will be more arrests following the detention of the two main instigators.
“We have to fast-track the investigations without any delay. This is to avoid spill over effects of the issue,” he said.
Kaikas said the situation had cut down freedom of movement in the district.
