AN 18-year-old girl was buried alive in a landslip at 9-Mile in Lae after a heavy downpour on Sunday.
Nelly Goi, from Kewamugl, Chimbu, was fast asleep in a makeshift shelter when earth buried her.
“My daughter’s body was dug out of the rubble and soil at about 7am on Monday,” father Goi Kair said.
“The makeshift shelter was about 30m from our house.
“Her leg was sticking out from the soil and rubble.
“The land was excavated for the construction of a house.
“The landslip occurred at about 9pm on Sunday.
“It was raining heavily and we did not hear any noise.
“It was not a big landslide.
“She was cooking and after that placed a headphone over her ears and was fast asleep.
“The last time we saw her was between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday.”
Goi said at about 6pm on Sunday, “we looked for her to join us for dinner”. “We thought she was with her brother on the other side of the small creek, which was also flooded,” he said.
“It was raining so we did not bother much to look for her.”
Nelly was the fourth child in a family of six and had completed grade six in 2018.
She went to Lae and had been living with her family in the settlement since then.
Morobe Disaster and Emergency Services director Charlie Masange said they were yet to get formal reports from the Wampar local level government administration.
“People are cautioned when building their houses along ridges and mountains,” he said.
“They must be alert during the wet season.
“Be careful when walking around mountain slopes or ridges during heavy rain. Do not build houses and gardens in mountainous areas or on ridges.”
