POLICE have quelled a fight between armed Kulkul and Marup villagers in Karkar Island on Saturday.
Madang commander Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang said police responded swiftly after a lone policeman raised the alarm.
“A team from Madang police was rushed to the island and prevented the fight from escalating,” he said.
“Many innocent people could have been injured and properties destroyed if we had not acted swiftly.”
However, Rubiang said the situation on the island was still tense between the rival villagers who were armed with guns and other offensive weapons.
He said a youth from Kulkul village, who was shot and wounded in the fight, was hospitalised and treated as investigations continued.
Rubiang said initial police investigations revealed that a man, who, to his in-laws, was a victim from Kulkul village, was travelling back in a truck from Kinim station on Friday when he stopped at the village and started issuing threats to the villagers and demanded that they compensate him before he leave.
“Kulkul villagers fought with the man and stoned one of the Marup villagers and also took other things on the truck,” he said.
“The man and his group then returned, got themselves organised and armed, and returned to Kulkul in the same truck on Saturday morning.
“They went to a shop in Kinim station and insulted the people who were shopping.
“A policeman saw what was happening and alerted Madang police.”
Rubiang said a factory made gun and other offensive weapons were used by the group of men from Marup village who arrived in Walgum where the islanders do their daily marketing.
