A BANK employee was stabbed to death by four drunkard youths in the Kokopo market in East New Britain on Saturday.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Joseph Tabali said police had arrested three suspects and the fourth was on the run.
“Relatives of the Bank South Pacific employee protested to Ulagunan villagers yesterday morning to have all the killers arrested,” he said.
“Village community leaders should help police arrest the fourth suspect by today.”
Tabali said the situation was tense with angry relatives of the deceased trying to retaliate but police managed to intervene and control the situation.
“I have spoken to both parties to calm them down,” he said.
Tabali said he had warned relatives of the deceased in Kinabot against taking the law into their own hands, and to refrain from carrying offensive weapons in public.
“The people of Ulagunan are good people but it is just a few who are tarnishing the name of the peaceful community.
“I have also warned the people in Ulagunan to hide their bush knives, stones and other weapons as they might be thinking that the relatives of the deceased might retaliate,” Tabali said.
He could not give the full details on the murder as it happened within the market area. The town mayor is responsible for security there.
