PORT MORESBY: A 54-year-old policeman, charged with six counts of raping a 13-year-old girl in Port Moresby was committed to stand trial in the National Court.

Waigani committal court magistrate Danny Wakikura on Friday (April 8, 2022) said William Kokele, from Southern Highlands’ Pangia , and the girl were in the same premises when the offence took place.

“You have abused the trust of the girl had on you and that appeared to be enough evidence and whether you are guilty or not is a matter only for the National Court to decide,” he added.

A 54-YEAR-OLD policeman, charged with six counts of raping a 13-year-old girl in Port Moresby two years ago, was committed to stand trial in the National Court.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura on Friday said William Kokele, from Pangia, Southern Highlands, and the girl were in the same premises when the offence took place.
Magistrate Wakikura told Kokele that he had abused the trust the girl had on him and that appeared to be enough evidence and whether he was guilty or not was a matter only for the National Court would decide.
“You are a policeman and you have a position of trust which you have abused, therefore, there is enough evidence to have you committed for trial in the National Court,” he said. Kokele and the girl were neighbours in the same property at 6-Mile in Port Moresby, and on Sept 11, the girl returned home from school at 2pm and went to bathe about 20m away from the house. Police alleged that when the girl was returning to the house, he pulled her into his room where he raped her.
Kokele allegedly threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone and raped her again on Sept 14 and
19. He allegedly tried to rape the victim again on Sept 20, but she resisted.
They were seen by the girl’s grandfather, who reported the incident to her mother.
Kokele was later charged with six counts of rape.
