PORT MORESBY: Border commander ACP Peter Philip says any firearm bought by politicians or anyone for that matter, during this time (General Election 2022) for policemen will be confiscated.

“Official approvals had to be granted before public funds (including private funds) are used to buy guns for provinces in West Sepik, East Sepik and Western.

“Political leaders going around seeking approvals to buy high-powered arms must be very cautious.

“High-powered guns should not be bought for policemen at this time when we are planning for elections,” he added.

ASSISTANT Police Commissioner (ACP) Border Command Peter Philip says any firearm bought by politicians or anyone else during this time for police to use will be confiscated.
He said official approvals had to be granted before public funds were used to buy guns for provinces under his command – West Sepik, East Sepik and Western
“Political leaders from my provinces going around seeking approvals to buy high-powered firearms must be very cautious.
“High powered guns should not be bought for police at this time when we are planning for elections.
“The provincial police commanders must know what type of firearms they are buying, who is giving the approval because we have not accounted for firearms and cars bought by MPs and district development authorities for years.
“We must account for those because public funds were used to buy these firearms and vehicles that were given to police.
“Firearms have to be properly checked and registered,” he said.
Philip stressed that police were yet to account for firearms bought by an MP on the eve of the last general election. He said he was yet to find out, who under his command, had given the approval for the MP to go around buying firearms for policemen in his district.
“Don’t go around buying high powered firearms because we have problems with young policemen who do not know how to use them.
“I am going to confiscate all firearms bought by anyone, whether an MP or businessman, for police at this time, have them registered and accounted for, and distribute when the time is right,” he said.
Philip also stressed on the smuggling of firearms from the Indonesian border, saying they had no idea how many guns had been brought into the country.
“There is evidence of illegal guns being used by our people but we do not know how many guns are smuggled in each day,” he said.
