POLICE have rescued a 21-year-old woman who was held captive, assaulted and sexually abused by her ex-boyfriend for more than three weeks in Gerehu.
Three policemen from Gerehu police station broke down the door of a room in a rental compound and freed the woman on Good Friday.
The woman is from West Sepik and her captor was a 23-year-old man from Hela’s Tari.
The ex-boyfriend is also a landlord of the rental compound which belongs to his parents. He shares the rental collections with his sister.
The woman, who was locked up in a room for 22 days, alleged that she was beaten and raped and had objects shoved into her private parts and pictures taken.
She said her captor turned violent after she told him she wanted to break up the relationship.
Her captor also threatened to send the pictures to her parents and post them on social media if she left him.
Police were alerted on Friday by a neighbour who asked the policemen on duty to rescue the woman.
At about 2pm, Constable Benjamin Koim, Paul Joe and Duncan Warandua who were on patrol duty in the area broke down the door and rescued the woman.
“When we arrived, the door was bolted and had wires all over it,” a policeman said.
“We tried to open it but could not.
“We then went back to the station and got hammers and screwdrivers.
“The woman was unwell and we brought her to the station.
“Her ex-boyfriend has fled.”
The woman was then placed in the care of the police family and sexual violence unit in a safe house.
The Metropolitan Superintendent Office could not be reached for comments but a report on the incident was posted on the National Capital District Police Facebook page on Saturday (April 16, 2022) night.
