SOME expatriates are
taking advantage of local women by arranging “convenient marriages” with them
to start businesses or engage in illegal activities.
Assistant Commissioner Police Border Command Peter Philip made the observation
after officers from the Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA) arrested an
expatriate identified only as Joshua who told them that he was married to a woman
from Wewak, East Sepik, while he conducted missionary work.
“There (are) no proper documents to identify his country of origin.
“But he claims that he (is) married to a local lady from Banak village in
Wewak, East Coast,” he said.
ACP Philip said the mother of the woman should be arrested for harbouring
Joshua.
“If the mother was (afraid), she should have reported the matter to the police
in Wewak instead of providing shelter to Joshua,” he said.
“She cannot say that she was relieved after Joshua was taken away by the ICA
team.”
ACP Philip said they should have reported the matter to police if they regarded
Joshua as a “threat” to the community.
“They enjoyed having him around and providing shelter for him.
“This is very disappointing,” he said.
ACP Philip said the woman should have also reported Joshua to the police if she
did not want to marry him.
“He has been living among the locals in Banak claiming that he is a miracle
worker.
“Yet no one in the community told police about his strange actions,” he said.
