SEVEN people are dead, houses and properties destroyed as fresh fighting broke out between settlers in Wau’s Nami in Morobe last weekend, commander Superintendent Jacob Singura says.
“More than 100 houses have been razed by fire since the fighting started late last month,” he added.
He said the feud started following a disagreement between a couple which led to relatives taking sides until the situation got out of hand.
The death toll from the fighting is nine.
Two were killed in the earlier fighting.
“A section of the Northern mobile group and Bulolo’s mobile squad 15 have been deployed since Sunday to Wau and are now monitoring the situation,” he said.
Singura said from information gathered by police, outsiders had joined the fight between the people of Mumeng and Finschhafen in ward four.
“We have information that people from outside are also going into Wau to join up with their relatives in Nami and are fighting with high-powered weapons,” he said.
“This is very serious and police will make sure the outsiders will be dealt with accordingly.”
Singura said the warring ethnic groups were trying to payback for the lives lost and properties destroyed and “that is not a good sign, with fighting erupting any time”.
“We are planning to place a full mobile squad team for a full-month operation there as well as assigning six investigators to ensure the fighting is stopped and those involved identified and brought to justice,” he said.
Wau police is currently assisted by the provincial and Lae metropolitan police command.
Singura appealed to leaders from both sides to start a cease-fighting process quickly as school children, mothers, women and the elderly people were badly affected by the mayhem.
“The situation now is quiet but very tense,” he said.
