POLICE have arrested 19 people in connection with the ethnic clash in Morobe’s Wau that has claimed nine lives and the destruction of more than 100 houses to date.
Commander Superintendent Job Singura said the 19 suspects were now being interrogated for their role in the deadly feud that broke out on March 27 between the people of Mumeng and Finschhafen in Ward 4.
“Seventeen of the suspects were arrested on Tuesday,” he said.
“A couple, the instigators of the fighting, were arrested soon after March 27.
“They are all believed to have been in the forefront of the fighting.”
The conflict has left many families stranded, affecting children and their education.
The fighting started after a domestic conflict between a couple.
“From the interrogation, we believe the identification of the others will be established, followed by more arrests,” Singura said.
He said with the police manpower boosted over the week, the situation should be under control but urged the leaders from both sides of the ethnic groups to work with police and authorities to find a solution to the feud.
Singura said another two units from the Northern Mobile Group had been deployed to Wau yesterday.
“By the end of the week, police manpower should be effective on the ground to monitor and stabilise the situation,” he added.
He thanked the Bulolo development authority, Bulolo MP Sam Basil, Wau Rural and Mumeng local level governments for the support towards a cease in fighting between the ethnic groups.
Meanwhile, Singura is appealing to people in Mumeng to refrain from engaging in any illegal activities along the Lae-Bulolo Highway.
