A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl was beaten to death and buried in a shallow grave by her stepfather in Banana Block Settlement in Madang, commander Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang says.
“The murder occurred on April 2.
“The toddler was beaten to death and buried in the backyard of her home.
“Neighbours were suspicious when they did not see little Elizabeth and went to unearth a freshly dug site at the back of the stepfather’s house and found her broken body in a shallow grave,” he added.
“Police were alerted, and a team rushed to arrest both the stepfather and Elizabeth’s mother.
“The stepfather resisted arrest and fled. But police eventually caught him in Nabasa after shooting him in the leg.
“But he later died from the gunshot wound, and Elizabeth’s mother has been arrested and is currently in police custody,” Rubiang said.
Rubiang said the stepfather was a known drug addict and dealer and had recently escaped from police custody.
According to witnesses, Elizabeth was left in the care of her stepfather when the mother went to look for betel nut and cigarettes on Saturday evening.
“The child was hungry and crying when the stepfather started beating her with a tree branch and then bashed her head on the house post and cement floor under their house. She was left unconscious on the ground, and after a while when she regained her consiousness, the stepfather picked her up and threw her onto the ground and kicked her head,” the witness said.
The witness told The National that the girl had probably died by then.
When one of the concerned neighbors asked for Elizabeth that night, the stepfather said he had washed her and was sleeping.
“After several days of not seeing Elizabeth, we saw a freshly dug ground at the back of the house.
“We suspected the stepfather had probably killed her during the beating and buried her there.
“So a couple of us dug the grave and we found Elizabeth’s little broken body.
“We then called the police,” the witness said.
