A MAN was fined K2,000 or in default 24 months’ jail with light labour by the
Lae District Court for polygamy and assaulting his first wife.
Senior magistrate Pious Tapil also ordered Yari Sam, from Kagua’s Ware in
Southern Highlands, who has three wives, to pay K1,000 compensation to his
first wife.
“Polygamy is illegal but custom says you are to treat (your wife) fairly.
Domestic violence is a serious issue,” Tapil said.
“Domestic violence is eating into the fabric of family units. Government is
amending laws to curb domestic violence.”
On Thursday, at about 10pm, Sam was with his third wife, Hilda Petrus whom he
married three months ago, when he punched his first wife on the chest and right
cheek.
In a separate domestic violence case, Tapil jailed Kowane Kawax, 27, from
Wabag’s Birip village in Enga, for two and a half years with light labour in
Buimo Prison.
The court noted that Kawax was under the influence of alcohol when he assaulted
his wife.
“Alcohol is always the source of domestic violence in family units. Such
violent spouses are often the cause of family break-ups,” Tapil said.
The court heard that the wife was beaten up on several occasions while Kawax
was drunk.
He allegedly punched the back of his wife’s head, kicked her in the face and
stood on the back of her head, causing her to bleed.
