3 cops freed from murder

PORT MORESBY: A committal court has freed three policemen charged with murder due to insufficient evidence.

Magistrate Billy Pidu struck out the case against Junior Moses, Kuresa Opa and Chad Muriki.

“The policemen have spent one year, eight months in prison without any sufficient evidence being provided by police.

“So this case is struck out due to want of prosecution and the accused are discharged from lawful custody,”Piudu said.

In a related case in another committal court, magistrate Danny Wakikura will make a ruling today (Dec 12, 2022) on another two policemen who were similarly charged with murder based on the same facts as the trio.

A COMMITTAL court has freed three policemen charged with murder due to insufficient evidence.
Magistrate Billy Pidu struck out the case against Junior Moses, Kuresa Opa and Chad Muriki.
“The policemen have spent one year, eight months in prison without any sufficient evidence being provided by the police.
“So this case is struck out due to want of prosecution and the accused are discharged from lawful custody,” Pidu said.
In a related case in another committal court, magistrate Danny Wakikura will make a ruling on another two policemen who were similarly charged with murder based on the same facts as the trio.
At 10.25pm on March 28, the two policemen and the trio allegedly stopped over in Inauabui village when returning from Bereina.
They allegedly picked up Emmanuel Ivagai, 27, with his bicycle and drove off.
They allegedly returned at about 11pm and sold three bicycles for K50 each at the Biotou market.
As they were about to drive away, witnesses heard a man crying out for help from inside the police patrol vehicle but policemen inside allegedly swore at him and drove away.
Ivagai’s father then lodged a kidnapping report at the Central police headquarters in Gordon.
About a week later on April 4, a decomposed body was found by a telecommunications tower watchman at the Tapini junction.
The villagers were alerted and Ivagai’s family members identified the body from the clothes he was last seen wearing.
