GOILALA MP Casmiro Aia says 17 people died in Woitape during a fight with members of a gang whose leader was badly injured.
Apart from that, Casmiro said two people were killed and others badly injured during a grenade attack at the Fane Catholic mission last week.
“We have confirmed that 17 people have been killed and the ring leader suffered injuries,” he said.
“The grenade attack caused two deaths and several sustained serious injuries.”
Aia told The National yesterday that a gang of more than 50 men had lived in the district for years and had been responsible for many deaths.
“The people are aware of this gang who have been killing people unnecessarily for some time,” he said.
“Sources confirmed that the gang has 52 men.”
Last week, an official from Aia’s office said he had asked police commissioner David Manning to send a police team to the district to restore order and arrest those causing trouble.
Attempts to get an update on the situation from acting provincial police commander Senior Insp Patterson Birigi were unsuccessful.
