A WOMAN who claimed she acted in self-defence when she stabbed and killed her husband in Lae was committed to stand trial in the National Court yesterday.
Committal Court Magistrate Pious Tapil told Cleo William, 28, from Sigima village in Sinasina, Chimbu, that while she claimed her act was unintentional and in self-defence, it was a matter for a trial to decide.
The medical report stated that William’s husband had died from a loss of blood through the injuries sustained from knife wounds.
William was ordered to appear for mention in the National Court on Jan 23.
Police alleged that William committed the offence at the Dry Wara area in West Taraka, Lae, on May 9.
The court heard that the incident happened during a Mother’s Day celebration after the coupled were intoxicated and had an argument.
Police said when William and her husband were walking home, they had got into an argument and William had stabbed him in left calf (lower leg) with a kitchen knife.
Despite efforts to get the injured husband to the hospital, he died due to heavy loss of blood.
Police also told the court that William claimed during her interview that the deceased had punched her knocking her to the ground and was trying to kick her in the face when she stabbed him in the leg while trying to defend herself.
