POLICE have shot dead a man, wanted for a string of crimes, in a shoot-out with a gang of criminals in Kokopo’s Turagunan, East New Britain police Commander Chief Insp Gabriel Bandy says.
“The dead (John Raphel) is one of the criminals from Kunakunai who has been instigating the fights between Kunakunai, Turagunan and Tiganalom. He was also wanted for arson and robberies,” he added.
Bandy said the shoot-out occurred at about 2pm on Sunday.
“Raphael and his other gang members were armed with homemade guns, bush knives, iron rods and other offensive weapons.
They insulted and attacked the people while they were attending a funeral service.
“After I was alerted, police response units and Mobile Squads policemen rushed to the scene and Raphael and his gang members started firing,” he said.
“Raphael was shot dead on the spot, one was wounded and the rest escaped.”
Bandy said police transported Raphael and the wounded to Nonga Hospital.
“We are now keeping a close watch on the wounded suspect,” he added. He said the ring leaders of this gang were Steven Diril and Jack Bilak.
Bilak was detained in the Kerevat Prison while Diril was on the run.
Bandy said Diril was wanted for a double murder, armed robbery, arson and rape.
“We are planning a massive raid soon and I am appealing to these suspects to surrender to police as soon as possible as your identities are known to us,” Bandy said.
