TWO youths were shot dead and another is in hospital after an attempted break-in at the home of an expatriate man and his family in Lae on Monday, says a senior police official.
Lae metropolitan police commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban said the youths were between 15 and 17 years of age and had tried to rob the family when the man shot and killed two of the suspects and wounded another in the neck while two others escaped.
“The criminals jumped over the fence and into the residence. They then distracted the dogs while the others progressed to the main door and tried to open it using a pinch bar,” he said.
Kunyanban said the man’s wife saw what was happening and alerted her husband as the criminals entered the home and tried to attack them.
The man, who has a licensed firearm (hand gun), discharged multiple shots at the suspects who were also armed.
“The first criminal was shot dead in the house while the other one was shot, but managed to make it out of the house before dying outside.
The third suspect was shot in the neck but escaped and went to Angau General Hospital for medical assistance.”
He said the other two accomplices fled the residence when the first youth was killed, leaving behind home-made guns, pinch bars and wire-catapults.
Kunyanban said with a bout of prolonged wet weather in the city, criminals were targeting homes and businesses to rob as the rain would mask the breaking in.
Police have cautioned city residents to be alert and take precautions when travelling and at home and to secure their businesses and property.

Guards shot, slashed intruder to death, say police

A MAN was slashed to death after 15 armed intruders broke into a family house in Lae’s Back Road area, says commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban.
“The robbers (turned killers) were armed with wire-catapults, home-made guns and other weapons. While in the fenced compound, they attacked the family and stole from them.
“They did not notice that they were being watched by some other men providing security for the compound and house,” he added.
“One of the robbers then tried to use the homemade gun when he was shot at by the family’s security. The man fell and was slashed to death.”
Kunyanban said the robbers then fled the scene.
Police at the scene later sent the man’s body to the mortuary.
“The public must understand clearly that this is a criminal matter. This has nothing to do with ethnic problems.
According to police, the robbers entered a family residence and one of them was killed.
“School students must learn from what has happened and refrain from engaging in criminal activities.
“Everyone is struggling to survive in the city and if you entered a premise unlawfully, people will try to protect lives and properties, and in the course of doing this, your life may come under extreme risk,” he added.
Kunyanban said spreading false information to get support for your crime was wrong and police would keep a close watch as “this is one approach that has given rise to ethnic clashes in the past”.
“This a criminal matter and police is dealing with it,” Kunyanban said.
“If you engage in criminal activities, then face the consequences of your actions.
“Do not try to involve other innocent people.”
