A PARTIAL liquor
restriction will be enforced in Port Moresby on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and
New Year’s Day.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop told The National yesterday that
there would be no other ban except on Monday (Dec 26), Boxing Day, and on Dec
27 in-lieu of Christmas Day (Dec 25) which falls on Sunday.
“And on Monday, Jan 2, also in-lieu of New Year, which falls on the Sunday,” he
said
“This partial liquor ban will be for the dedicated public holidays only.
“This is to ensure peace and good order during the festive season and also so
that business houses do not lose business too much.
“I hope that with this partial ban, everyone will celebrate wisely and without
much disturbance due to alcohol-related problems,” he said.
Police Commissioner David Manning said that police would be assisting the NCDC
liquor licensing officers to enforce the partial restriction.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Chief Supt Silva Sika said police would work in
partnership with NCDC to enforce the partial ban and those who do not comply
would be arrested. City manager Frank Ravu said that the restriction would
apply to the following categories of liquor premises which included store
keepers, bottle shops, dealers, taverns, public bars in both publicans and
limited hotels and holders of cabaret permit.
“Exceptions will be allowed for licensed premises, the subject of club
restricted to members and their guests and restaurants for diners, who take
liquor with their meals, publicans and limited hotels and will be restricted to
their lodgers and their guests.”

MOROBE is expected to have a quieter Christmas
than usual with a total liquor ban in the province.
Acting provincial administrator Max Bruten said although he understood that
liquor was one of the major revenue earners, he also had an obligation to
ensure that others enjoyed the festive season peacefully.
“The liquor ban is for the province which will cover nine districts — except
Wau-Waria,” Bruten said.
“All liquor outlets must be closed by Monday (Dec 19) and are to reopen on Feb
1,” he said.
“Exceptions will be given to hotels and motels that will serve within their
premises but does not include nightclubs,” Bruten said.
He said a total liquor ban for Wau-Waria started on Monday and would continue
for an indefinite period until further decision would be made at a later date.
Jiwaka and Gulf have also called for a liquor ban over the festive season,
Christmas and New Year period, with police to patrol towns and public places to
ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, residents living in the Gerehu area of Port Moresby are urged to
celebrate Christmas responsibly as police station commander Hanson Tokally
warns of increased petty crimes.
