POLICE arrested five
marijuana traffickers in West New Britain (WNB) last week, Commander Chief
Inspector John Iara says.
“They were trying to smuggle the marijuana, worth about K100,000 in the black
market, from Lae to Bialla.
“They were stopped at Lasibu Point and the marijuana seized,” he added.
Iara said the suspects were on board a passenger vessel heading to Bialla from
Lae.
“About four miles from Bialla wharf, the drug was transferred from the vessel
to a dinghy along with two suspects.
“The vessel’s captain alerted police through the shipping agent in Bialla.
“A task force team then chased the suspects and searched surrounding islands
and shores in Bialla.
“The dinghy was spotted by the team at Lasibu Point and 17 clamps of the drug
and three fire crackers were seized,” he added.
Iara said drugs had been a problem for WNB over the years, particularly
smuggling from Lae to Kimbe.
He urged the people of WNB to celebrate the festive season in the true spirit
of love and respect for one another.
