64-year-old man to stand trial for raping 12-year-old girl

PORT MORESBY: A 64-year-old man was committed to stand trial in the National Court for raping a 12-year-old girl in August 2022.

Magistrate Danny Wakikura told the man that there was sufficient evidence provided by the prosecution to sustain the charge.

A 64-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly raped a 12-year-old girl last year has been committed to stand trial at the National Court.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura told the accused from Mou village in Bereina, Central, that there was sufficient evidence provided by the prosecution to sustain the charge.
“You are now committed to stand trial in the National Court as there is sufficient police evidence provided to this court,” Magistrate Wakikura said.
“You can go to the National Court and defend yourself at trial.”
Magistrate Wakikura ordered the accused to file his declaration (Section 96 Statement) by Dec 14.
Office of the Public Solicitor lawyer Kim Watakapura, who represented the accused, told the court that they had no issue with presenting the defence submission on Dec 14.
Police alleged that between Aug 1 and Aug 20, 2020, at Potea Street, Hohola One, the accused sexually abused the victim multiple times.
It was alleged that on one occasion the accused lured the victim into the house he was living in and into a room where he allegedly pushed her down to the floor, removed her clothes and raped her.
Police further alleged that on Oct 19, 2021, he held the victim against a refrigerator and raped her.
The matter was reported to police and the accused was arrested by the sexual offences squad officers and taken to Boroko Police Station.
He was interviewed and charged with the sexual penetration of a minor under section 229(A)(1) and persistence sexual abuse under section 229D (1) of the Criminal Code Act.
