EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says the burning down of school infrastructure is uncalled for and those responsible for causing damage worth thousands of kina must be brought to justice.
He made the comments following a recent incident in East New Britain where classroom buildings at a primary school in the Raluana local level government (LLG) area of Kokopo were burned down.
“It takes time and money to build school infrastructure,” he said.
“Such actions by local communities to destroy school properties and infrastructure should be condemned.”
Some teachers who taught at Kabagap Primary School located in the Ngatur area told The National that they all left last year when fighting started between the two groups who used the school as their battlefield.
Bungtabu Akuila, who taught at the school for nine years, said the school had been deserted last year due to the continuous fighting.
“Although teachers were posted back at the school this year, they did not resume duties due to the tribal fights,” she said.
All attempts by The National to get comment from provincial education authorities regarding the incident were unsuccessful.
However, provincial police commander Chief Inspector Joseph Tabali confirmed that the school had been deserted in 2020 due to the ongoing clashes between the two groups.
“The criminal investigation division is currently carrying out investigations on the matter,” he said.
“Those responsible for setting fire to the classrooms will face the full force of the law once they are identified, arrested and charged.”
Tabali also appealed to all the ward councillors in the area to help police identify the perpetrators so they could be brought to justice.
He said police would not stop until all those responsible were behind bars.
