Police director Chief Supt Dominic Kakas charged in court

PORT MORESBY: Police media director Chief Supt Dominic Kakas was yesterday (Feb 22, 2022)  charged in the Waigani committal court with a count each of abuse of office and corruption and two counts of receiving stolen money.

Kakas was arrested and later released on K1,000 bail.

His police bail was converted to court bail and magistrate Paul Nii fixed March 29 for next hearing.

POLICE media director Chief Supt Dominic Kakas appeared at the Waigani Committal Court yesterday charged with a count each of abuse of office and official corruption and two counts of receiving stolen money.
Kakas was arrested and later released on K1,000 bail.
His police bail was converted to court bail yesterday and was extended until his next hearing on March 29.
Police alleged that Kakas, 53, from Wabag in Enga, used his privilege to facilitate and involve senior officers to negotiate the sale of land located in Section 315, Lot 25-35 in Toliman Circuit, Gerehu Stage 6, when Gari Baki was the commissioner from 2014 to 2017.
The alleged negotiation was for the purchase of the land to build a multi complex police station, including a police barracks for the Moresby North West electorate.
According to police, Singaut Contractors was owned by Kakas’ wife Kathy Pittz.
The purchase for the land was approved in 2015.
Kakas allegedly received K118,167.33 stolen money.
Kakas’ lawyer Edward Sassingian told the court that his client was not properly arrested, he was processed before being arrested and charged.
Magistrate Nii told Sassingian to make proper application..
The matter was adjourned to March 29 to allow police to establish allegations levelled against Kakas.
