THE sale and consumption of alcohol will be banned in the border provinces of East Sepik, West Sepik and Western during the national election, a senior police officer says.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – border command – Peter Philip said there would be a total ban on alcohol in the border command to help ensure a peaceful election.
“All the provincial police commanders under the border command will ensure that no retail outlet or trade store sells alcohol during the election period,” he said.
Philip said there had been alcohol-related deaths during past national elections and he wanted to prevent this from happening.
He said the ban was one measure the authorities were taking to ensure that this did not happen again. “Alcohol has caused so many deaths during the previous elections and for this year’s election, I do not want to see this happening in the provinces under my command,”Philip said.
He said alcohol consumption was already the main cause of social problems in communities and with the elections, this would be multiplied if nothing was done to control it.
“We have to ban alcohol during the election period to avoid social problems and help save lives; creating awareness and taking precautionary measures can help make our election free and fair.”
Philip said during elections, it was usually candidates that influenced their supporters with alcohol.
“Alcohol will be totally banned and no candidates and their supporters are allowed to cause a public nuisance during the election period.”
