THE death of a man allegedly caused by police in Bogia, Madang, has seen the deceased’s relatives march to the police station with the body and damage the newly-built facility.
Police reinforcements from Madang town managed to round up 34 suspects, all males, and detain them in relation to the incident at the station.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said some of the men would be charged for their part in the attack on the station and damage of police properties, including vehicles.
Rubiang told The National that the deceased, identified as Jerom Handuwi, 28, was with another man in the vicinity of a government compound that had reported continuous disturbances when police responded.
“Upon seeing the police officers, the two men ran up the Ilulu mountainside,” he said.
“Police pursued and in the process one of the suspects was shot.
“He was brought to the Bogia health centre, but succumbed to his injuries and the relatives of the deceased from Wanam village retaliated and stormed the station.
“They brought the deceased’s body back and placed it in front of the station and demanded ‘bel kol’ money.”
Rubiang said the villagers had broken louvres on windows at the station and broke into the cells and released two detainees and also damaged three police vehicles – two Land Cruisers and a Ford Raptor.
He said two police officers were also pelted with stones and sustained injuries to the head and nose during the incident.
Bogia Police Station commander Chief Sgt Anton Michael paid for the hospital ambulance to take the body to the morgue and gave K400 to the relatives.
Police reinforcements from Madang town arrived later and went to Wanam village and arrested the 34 suspects.
Rubiang and his officers approached the family yesterday and informed them that the policeman who allegedly shot Handuwi had been suspended and would be charged and investigated.
