MISS Pari, Raila English, was crowned Hiri-Hanenamo Queen 2021-22 during
the Hiri-Moale Festival in Port Moresby on Sunday despite the Coronavirus
(Covid-19) pandemic.
English, 21, scooped the top prize at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium and
described her win as a dream come true and a blessing for her family.
“I am a mixed-race woman and being crowned Hiri Queen shows that I know my
culture and tradition as a true Motuan,” she said.
“I’m very proud to have shared my knowledge about my Pari culture in an open
arena.”
Motu-Koitabu Assembly (MKA) chairman Dadi Toka Jnr said despite the Covid-19
surge, the Hiri-Moale Festival was managed well by the organising committee.
“National Pandemic
Controller David Manning gave the approval for the festival to take place and I
am happy that everyone is following the Covid-19 safety measures,” he said.
Ranuinu Willie, a former Hiri Queen and English’s aunt, said it was a blessing
for the family to see her niece crowned.
“I was the first Hiri Queen in 1987 when Sir Dadi Toka was the MKA chairman
and, coincidently, my niece is contesting when Toka Jnr is chairman.”
Willie said she was proud to have prepared all the traditional attires and
tattoo designs for English. “She (English) was well prepared to contest and her
win was well deserved.”
Toka added that the
Hiri-Hanenamo was more like bonding time for young Motuan women.
“It helps the young women share their cultures and traditions and also what the
different tattoos symbolised,” he said.
Toka said it was important for all 10 contestants to stay positive in whatever
career they had.
“Participating in the Hiri-Hanenamo is a good opportunity for exposure to find
employment and you all have to stay positive,” he said. The Hiri-Hanenamo first
runner-up was Miss Elevala Guba Aileen Hitolo and second runner-up was Miss
Gabagaba Noeleen Nouairi.
On Saturday, Lady
Emeline Tufi Dadae, wife of Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae, hosted a tea for
the 10 contestants at the Government House.
Lady Emeline said it was very encouraging to see young women facing the
challenge of advocating and representing their culture in a wider audience as
in the celebrations of Hiri-Moale Festival.
“In this age of
modernisation and technological advancement, culture and traditional values are
fast losing their significance among the younger generation as seen in their
attitude and behaviour,” she said.
Lady Emeline said the contestants were role models and inspiration to everyone
to value culture and take pride in one’s cultural identity.
Meanwhile, Pacific Industries Ltd’s Pepsi PNG supported the MKA Hiri Moale
Festival with a sponsorship package worth K7,500.
