to be trialed as an adult for now
PORT MORESBY: The “video girl” who allegedly filmed
herself molesting a 15-month-old toddler has been denied bail until proof of
her birth date is produced in court.
Magistrate Paul Nii said
the case would still proceed in the committal court.

A GIRL who allegedly molested a toddler, took
a video of it which she posted on social media, has been denied bail until
proof of her birth date is produced in court.
Magistrate Paul Nii said the case would still proceed in the Committal Court.
Bail is revoked on the grounds that there was no evidence that she is a
juvenile, he said. Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Chris Iga told the court
that her parents were in Wabag but her brother and uncle could confirm that she
was 18.
The brother told the court that from his recollection, his sister was born in
2004 when he was doing his first year of studies at university.
His parents had informed him then over the phone about the birth of his sister
in the village.
“There was no proper documentation of her birth,” he said.
He told the court that he brought his sister to baby-sit his children in 2015,
and she had since lived with his family.
The uncle told the court that he first saw her when he visited the family in
2016. But Magistrate Nii said: “Whatever you said in court are just words.
“If the defendant was born in a remote place, there will be a hospital nearby
which the parents would visit a few days or weeks after the baby was born.
“That hospital or clinic should have a record.
“I will wait for that record.
“For now, I am not certain of how old the defendant is because there is no
birth certificate or medical record of her birth before this court,” he said.
“For this reason, the defendant will be treated as an adult and the matter will
progress in the committal court.”
