A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who killed her husband by stabbing him in the buttocks was jailed eight years by the National Court in Kundiawa.
Justice Daniel Liosi told Gene Bagle, from Sinasina-Yonggomugl’s Dumai-Nilmai village in Chimbu on Tuesday that “this is another wanton killing in a domestic setting.”. “I give the benefit of the doubt to you, given the plea,” Justice Liosi said.
“I note the extenuating circumstances of your husband, a habitual marijuana smoker and the habitual assault on you.
“This alternatively led to the killing.
“I have noted the comparable cases cited, the mitigating and aggravating factors and the plight of your children,” he added.
Bagle will serve seven years in jail with hard labour after the court deducted time spent in custody.
On Jan 29, last year, at about 7am, Bagle and her husband Bagle Kaupa were together in their Gabakure village residence in Sinasina-Yonggomugl.
They had an argument and Bagle stabbed Kaupa with a kitchen knife on the left side of his buttocks.
He was rushed to the hospital but died.
Bagle was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
On Sept 6, Bagle pleaded guilty to manslaughter and apologised for her actions.
She also apologised to her five children and said they were all over the place, deserted by Kaupa’s relatives.
She added that Kaupa was a marijuana addict and was always violent and aggressive towards her.
Bagle said on the day of the killing, she was using the kitchen knife to peel sweet potatoes when Kaupa used a stick to hit her on the head.
While bleeding, she used the knife to keep him away and stabbed him.
Bagle said she did not intend to kill him.
