Doctor seriously injured in attack

PORT MORESBY: Enga Provincial Health Authority’s Acting Health Director (Curative Health Services) Dr Kanandru Pondros was seriously injured in an attack on Thursday (Nov 3, 2022).

“Pondros sustained injuries on his head, face and limbs, in the attack outside his home,” National Doctors Association President Dr James Naipao said.

Enga Commander Chief Inspector George Kakas said police would treat the incident as an attempted murder case.

ENGA Provincial Health Authority’s acting health director (curative health services) Dr Kanandru Pondros was seriously injured in an attack on Thursday.
“Pondros sustained injuries on his head, face and limbs in the attack outside his home,” National Doctors Association president Dr James Naipao said.
Naipao said Pondros, also Enga’s deputy director medical services, was rushed to Wabag Hospital and immediately attended to by two senior surgeons, Dr Anthony Nasai and Dr Timothy Pyaku.
“We condemn the attack on a senior defenceless doctor,” he said in a statement on Friday.
“It is with sincere respect to the neighbouring communities and tribes, police and defence personnel on the ground to swiftly and collectively arrest the six culprits.
“At present, police, defence and the neighbouring tribes are providing security to the hospital and Wabag town. The family of Pondros has been safely relocated,” he added.
Naipao said the surgeons, with enormous trauma experience managed to treat and stabilise Pondros.
Enga Police Commander Chief Inspector George Kakas said police would treat the incident as an attempted murder case.
