Last chance for cops to file murder attempt defence

PORT MORESBY: Four policemen, charged with attempted murder, were given a last chance by a committal court in Waigani to file their defence.

“May this be the last adjournment, if there are no defence submissions made on the returnable date, then I will consider the police evidence and make my ruling,” magistrate Paul Puri Nii said.

The four policemen are charged with trying to kill Samuel Naraboi, a son of a policeman, outside the Games Village police barracks in Tokarara between 6.30am and 7am on Feb 27, 2022.

WAIGANI committal court Magistrate Paul Puri Nii has given a final adjournment to four policemen charged with the attempted murder of Samuel Naraboi to present their defence submission.
“May this be the last adjournment, if there are no defence submissions made on the returnable date then I will consider the police evidence and make my ruling”.
Magistrate Nii ordered for the defence submission to be made on Nov 24.
Public Solicitor’s Office lawyer Obadiah Himore, who stood in for colleague David Kayok, representing the policemen sought adjournment as Kayok was out on a national court circuit in Kerema.
“He has completed the defence submission and would ask the court for adjournment so he can return and present the submissions”.
The four policemen — Emmanuel Somon, 30; Philemon Parom, 28; Ade Kawa, 29; and, Frank Apa, 30 — were in court. Magistrate Nii told them to follow up with their defence submission and not to delay and wait for miracles.
“This is your case and you have to feel responsible to follow up with the Office of the Public Solicitor despite the lawyer assisting you is out for the National Court circuit,” Magistrate Nii told the policemen.
Police alleged that on Feb 27, between 6.30am and 7am, four policemen were seen at the roundabout between the Games Village police barracks, Tokarara and Waigani driveway.
Naraboi and William Michael were walking down toward Waigani bus stop after spending a night with a friend.
At the junction at the Games Village police barracks, they saw a man by the road side selling betel nuts and cigarettes.
Naraboi approached a betel nut seller and asked if he could spare him a nut.
The betel nut seller then responded by swearing at the young men.
