NATIONAL Airports Corporation (NAC) chief executive Rex Kiponge will be investigated by the National Security Advisory Committee for ordering the temporary closure of the Jackson International Airport in Port Moresby earlier this month.
The Prime Minister James Marape in a National Security Council meeting asked the committee to investigate the incident where a Notice to Air Missions (Notam) was enforced earlier this month at the country’s main airport.
Marape in responding to questions from The National on whether Kiponge would be asked to step down while the National Security Council investigates the incident, said that he would have to wait for the council’s recommendation.
“If during the investigation, they feel that he (Kiponge) needs to step down in order for investigations to continue then they will make that recommendation to me and he will be asked to step down, if not then investigations will continue, while he is still in office, but I will have to meet with the council first,” he said.
On Nov 12, Kiponge authorised a Notam for the Jackson International Airport, closing down operations and leaving hundreds of travelers stranded.
He authorised the Notam a day after he was arrested by police inside the airport premises.
A police investigation into charges of corruption against Kiponge are ongoing.
