Cop told to file defence against double-murder charge

PORT MORESBY: A policeman charged with double murder has told a committal court in Waigani that he could not present his submissions because his lawyer was on court circuit in Gulf’s Kerema.

Carl Laba, 23, from Western’s South Fly, is alleged to have shot and killed two men in Port Moresby’s Erima on Sept 28, 2021.

Laba’s lawyer from the Public Prosecutor’s Office is in Kerema on court circuit.

A POLICEMAN charged with two counts of murder has told a committal court that he could not present his defence submission since his lawyer was on court circuit in Kerema, Gulf.
Carl Laba, 23, from South Fly, Western, allegedly shot and killed two men at Erima in Port Moresby on Sept 28 last year.
Laba’s lawyer from the Office of the Public Solicitor, David Kayok, is in Kerema on court circuit.
Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Danny Wakikura gave Laba three weeks to file his defence submission.
“I will adjourn the case to Nov 30 so you can consult your lawyer and file your defence submission before the returnable date,” he told Laba.
Magistrate Wakikura told Laba that if he did not present his defence submission on Nov 30, a ruling would be made based on the police evidence.
Police prosecutor Sgt Joseph Sangam did not object to the adjournment. “The prosecution has no issue with the adjournment date as it will give enough time for Laba to file his defence submission and present it on the returnable date,” he said.
It was alleged that between 7pm and 8pm on Sept 28 last year, policemen from Seven-Mile Airport and Gordon, Six-Mile Saraga stations and the K9 Dog Unit drove into the settlement and removed betel nut and cigarette vendors.
Police alleged that the public retaliated by verbally abusing the policemen and throwing objects at them because of their aggressive approach.
They said police then advanced into the settlement and destroyed properties, trade stores were broken into, damaged and goods were stolen.
Settlers were also shot at, resulting in the death of Tamipe Tigili and Tagali Kopaja.
Laba’s co-accused Komeng Gubag is facing a similar charge.
The case has been adjourned to Nov 30.
