A 56-YEAR-OLD man was brutally murdered in front of his family on Oct 24 by an alleged cult group in Bogia, Madang, police say.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the group had claimed the deceased was practicing sorcery.
“That was the motive behind the murder of the man,” he said.
Rubiang said the group was believed to be operating in the Malala/Yoro area of Bogia.
He said relatives of the deceased from Manam Island were expected to travel to Korak village to demand compensation from the suspects involved in the killing.
He said according to information received from Ulatapun villagers, Bogia people who are believed to have some connection to the murder would join with the Korak villagers.
“The Bogia people will team up with the Korak people to receive the demands of the Manam Islanders,” he said.
The commander said there was a strong possibility that both parties would be armed.
Rubiang said he had deployed 10 officers from Madang to Bogia to assist local police arrest the suspects.
He said sorcery-related killings had increased and this was a major concern.
“I appeal to the communities and leaders to assist the police to hand the suspects over to police,” he said.
“We police need the support of the people to fight such crimes.”
