TWO people were killed in a drunken brawl near the Dauli Teachers College in Hela’s Komo-Hulia last weekend.
Deputy police commissioner Donald Yamasombie told The National yesterday that the fight started between two locals in the market over a disagreement.
“According to initial police reports, there are only two confirmed deaths. One was killed during the fight and his family retaliated and killed another.
“Both were locals and this is an isolated incident not related in any way to the killing of a policeman,” he added.
Yamasombie also said the two men killed were not members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) as speculated on social media platforms. “We have sent in police reinforcements, the situation is still tense but has been contained,” he said.
The PNGDF forward operating base in Hela has also advised that one of the two men killed was not a soldier.
This comes after pictures of the men killed showed one dressed as a soldier on social media.
Meanwhile, Hela Governor Philip Undialu has called for peace and people to respect the law.
“This fight started from two men having a disagreement in the market and escalated. We are working with local leaders to address the matter,” he said.
“Additional manpower of security forces have been brought in to protect state properties, including the teachers’ college in Dauli.”
Meanwhile, classes in Hela have been suspended temporarily following the killings.
Community leader Danny Janari said MP Daniel Tindipu responded quickly by sending security forces to education institutions to quell the fight. Dauli Teachers College, Dauli primary and several elementary schools in Hela have suspended classes until further notice.
Janari, who is from Dauli, said a suspected tribal “warlord” sought refuge by living with relatives from Hawa in the Dauli village in Tari-Pori.
Under the influence of alcohol, the warlord swung a knife at a man from the village and nearly killed him.
The people from Dauli and bystanders quickly disarmed the “warlord”. “In retaliation, the ‘warlord’ attacked the innocent man’s brother that led to a fullscale fight resulting in several houses torched and razed and the killings,”Janari said.
“The Dauli community is peaceloving. We have the teachers college and when problem arises, it is quickly resolved. We respect government institutions.
“The people want the fight to cease and security forces manpower increased. Innocent students, teachers and lecturers are affected.”
