POLICE have recovered the body of one of the three children allegedly killed and dumped in a river by their mother in Western Highlands.
Tambul-Nebilyer police station commander Chief Sergeant Jacob Kumin said the body of the eight-year-old son, the eldest of the three, was recovered three days ago.
He said the bodies of the two daughters, aged five and three, were still missing.
The mother, Lavina Jacob, 29, is from Glomi village in Lower Nebilyer. She has been detained.
The son’s body was discovered some distance away from Glomi village.
“Police can access the area where the body was recovered only by air,” Kumin said.
“It is in one of the remotest parts of Lower Nebilyer and it is a challenge for police to assist in the search. But locals are taking the lead in looking for the sisters’ bodies.”
Kumin urged mothers not to punish their innocent children in such a manner.
“Lavina Jacob’s (alleged) action must be a lesson to all mothers – never to take such inhuman actions on their children or anyone else,” he urged.
Provincial commander Supt John Sagom condemned such action, saying it was the second such case in the province.
The first incident was reported in 2010 in Mt Hagen.
