A 23-YEAR-OLD woman was allegedly murdered at Makopin village, Wewak in East Sepik by her lover’s wife last month, police say.
Police identified the deceased as Avila Apis from Maringe village, Yangoru-Saussia.
It was alleged that on Oct 22, a confrontation occurred at Makopin village between Apis and the suspect.
According to East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli, the suspect’s partner had been having an affair with the deceased.
The husband met Apis at Urip village on Oct 22.
While the two were at a roadside market, the suspect spotted them while trying to take her two children to the Dagua Health Centre.
Apis and the husband left Urip village and walked to Woginara Junction.
When the suspect reached Urip village, she was told by bystanders that her husband had left with Apis and this made her angry.
The suspect left her sick children with others and rushed to Woginara Junction where she found her husband and Apis. She grabbed a grass knife from a woman who had just returned from her garden and attacked her husband wounding him on the head and arm.
She wrestled with him before he broke away and fled to their home at Makopin village with Apis.
The wife followed armed with a bush knife and confronted the pair at the family home in Makopin village. Apis tried to escape, but was assaulted by the public and fell.
The wife slashed Apis on the leg and buttocks.
Bystanders tried to rush Apis to the Dagua Health Centre, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said both the suspect and her husband were arrested and charged with wilful murder and manslaughter respectively.
