Government to help Papua New Guineans to own
land in urban areas
PORT MORESBY: Prime Minister James Marape says the
Government is launching a programme next year to help Papua New Guineans own
land in urban centres.
“The programme, to be
headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Land Minister John Rosso, is to organize all
urban areas so that people live on land that is legally acquired,” he added.
Marape urged Papua New
Guineans not to illegally settle on untitled land in urban centres.
He also warned
landowners who have evicted settlers that their land would be forfeited by the
State if they failed to develop it.

PRIME Minister James Marape says the
Government is launching a programme next year to help Papua New Guineans own
land in urban centres.
“The programme, to be headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Lands Minister John
Rosso, is to organise all urban areas so that people live on land that is
legally acquired,” he added.
Marape urged Papua New Guineans not to illegally settle on untitled land in
urban centres.
“People are also advised not to enter into any transaction with so-called
‘traditional landowners’, in an informal arrangement, as you may be evicted by
someone else who claims to be the ‘proper landowner.
“Starting next year, the Government will acquire additional land in towns and
cities which would be properly planned, so that working Papua New Guineans or
those involved in small business will be given a small piece of land,” he said.
“This land programme will be very big in our towns and cities.
“It pains me to see Papua New Guineans being evicted,” Marape added. He said
the Government would work closely with National Capital District Governor Powes
Parkop, on the “settlements to suburbs” programme.
“We will set aside funds for the programme to work,” Marape added.
“I also call on companies and individuals who claim to have title to land in
the city, and have evicted settlers, to immediately develop the land that they
claim to own,”he said.
“Why are people being evicted from settlements, as in Garden Hills and Morata,
and the land is not being developed?
“My warning is that if this land is not developed, it will be forfeited by the
State, and distributed to people in a planned manner.”
