POLICE in Mt Hagen have arrested a mother who reportedly killed her three children aged eight, five and three, and dumped their bodies in a river.
Western Highlands police commander Superintendent John Sagom said the bodies were yet to be recovered from the river.
The eldest was a son, aged eight, and two daughters, aged five and three.
Police suspect that the mother, Lavina Jacob, 29, killed them and threw their bodies into the Kagul River at the border of Western and Southern Highlands.
He confirmed that Jacob, of Glomi village in Lower Nebilyer, Western Highlands has been charged with wilful murder.
She was arrested on Oct 15 by the Kaupena police in Southern Highlands, and transferred to Mt Hagen on Oct 24.
She is now detained at the Mt Hagen police station.
Sagom said while Jacob would be giving a statement to the court on what happened and why, it was sad that innocent children had to suffer like that
“Children have a future to live and for innocent lives to be taken (away like that) is just inhuman,” he said.
“Societies are changing and people have no respect for each other and the law.”
He urged woman facing domestic problems to seek help rather than harming their children.
Sagom said it was the second such case in the province.
A similar incident happened about 10 years ago, in which a mother allegedly killed her four children and dumped them in a river.
She told police that she drowned her children because her husband never looked after her and them.
She said she was fed up with her husband’s constant drug abuse.
