FOUR policemen who
allegedly smuggled marijuana from Kerema to Port Moresby last year are facing
charges of being in possession of a dangerous drug and abuse of office.
Samson Sareng, 35, from Badilu village, Sumkar in Madang; Awi Cashmir, 30, from
Yafu village in Yangoru, East Sepik; Luke Ena, 33, from Zigori village, Huon
Gulf in Morobe; Simon Wia, 30 and from Migende, Kerowagi in Chimbu appeared
before Magistrate Paul Puri Nii at a Committal Court in Waigani for their
hearing.
Kerema district court senior provincial magistrate Oakaiva Olveka had
transferred the case to Waigani.
Magistrate Olveka said the case involved four policemen who were arrested with
three other civilians for being in possession of marijuana.
“There were other charges against the four policemen but these were not
presented to the court for the purpose of hearing,” he said.
The four policemen were allowed bail of K1,500 each.
Olveka said it was best to deal with the dangerous drug charge as it was the
main cause for their arrest.
“The three civilians were dealt with as plea matters and due to the delay, they
were all sentenced, except for defendant Ali Pango who escaped,” he said. It
was alleged that between 12am and 4am on Nov 11, 2021, the four policemen were
driving along the Trans Hiritano Highway between Iasipi village, Malalaua in
Gulf and Laloki settlement in Kairuku, Central on their way to Port Moresby on
a police-hired vehicle.
The policemen were allegedly transporting 32.5kg of marijuana in the vehicle
while on duty.
It was further alleged that the policemen were given K2,800 cash by some
civilians to transport the marijuana from Gulf along Hiritano Highway into Port
Moresby.
Follow up investigations confirmed that the policemen were all active members
of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and attached to the Public
Safety Unit of the Central police headquarters in Gordon, NCD.
When cautioned and questioned during the record of interview (ROI), the four
policemen chose to remain silent.
