FIFTEEN houses were torched and more than 15 families had been displaced following an alleged sorcery-related death in Oro on Nov 19, police say.
Acting provincial police Commander Chief Sgt Edric Boera said the burning down of the houses was an act of retaliation after a young girl was alleged to be killed by sorcery.
“It is alleged that a young girl was poisoned by three boys because they wanted a relationship with her,” he said.
Boera said the girl was taken to Popondetta General Hospital however, she died a few hours after arriving in the hospital.
“According to the medical report, there was no indication of any sickness or disease,” he said.
“Hence, this made the family believed that her death was sorcery-related.”
Boera said when the girl was admitted at the emergency ward, few family members went to the residence of the suspects and burnt down four houses.
“When the other relatives received word that she was dead, they went and burnt 11 more houses, totalling up to 15,” he said.
He said police were called in and prevented more houses from being torched.
“One suspect is in custody and we are yet to bring the other two in for questioning,” he said.
Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society and the National Disaster Office were contacted to help the displaced families.
